Francis Creek Youth Sports
County League baseball/softball season is right around the corner. We are in the process of finalizing team rosters, cleaning up concession stands and checking equipment. If you are still interested in signing up to play please contact Randy Bries @973-3330 as soon as possible. There are still some open spots on teams.
We would like to extend a great big thank you to Gale and JoAnne Fenlon and Scott Bohman for their generous donations. These donations are greatly appreciated and help keep the cost per family low.
If you are interested in purchasing pizza or other products from Hansen’s please contact a player to place an order. Order forms will be passed out at practices. Uniforms will also be handed out at practices this year.
Parents please check the concession stand schedule when you receive it from your child. It is very important that you work you scheduled days. We will try to post the schedule on this web site in the next newsletter. But you will receive a paper copy from your coach.
If you were not at the annual meeting and would like to volunteer your time for anything from coaching to helping with pizza sales or the concession stand please contact Randy. Thanks to all of you who already volunteered.
We are looking forward to the first swing of the bat. Come on down and enjoy some good ball, good company, a hot dog and a beverage.
Sportsmen’s Club
I would like to start by saying a big “THANK YOU” to the 17 members who showed up at 5pm last meeting night to help with the spring clean up. Our target this month was the shed. After an hour and a half we realized we had plenty of room in there after the trash and unwanted items were taken out. At the May meeting, we will again be meeting at 5 and trying to clean up the grounds a little. Extra items that will be needed are: rakes, shovels, tree trimmers, small chainsaw, telescoping cutters, etc. We will be attempting to get rid of a lot of stuff like tree limbs that were just thrown in the edge of the woods over the last couple years. Gloves are recommended.
May is also nominations for officers at the club. If you would like to step up and have a chance at running things around the club, please have someone nominate you or nominate yourself for an officer or director position. Nominations will also be held in June along with elections. New officers take over at the July meeting.
President’s Corner
Two well know members of our village were honored at this year’s Lakeshore All Sports Hall of Fame Banquet. The Achievement/Appreciation Award was given to Dave
Schmidt for his many years of dedication to youth sports.
Dave started coaching t-ball for Francis Creek in 1995 and coached at every level-peanuts, pee wees, ponies and colt leagues. He joined the Francis Creek Youth Sports Committee in 2003 and became president of the organization in 2007.
Though retired from youth sports coaching, Dave still loves going to the partk to sit in the bleachers and watch ball games with his wife, Joanie.
Julie Wojta was presented the Senior College Female Athlete Award. One of the most storied basketball players to come out of the Lakeshore area, Julie has taken her game to the next level, recently drafted to the Women’s National basketball Associations Minnesota Lynx.
The daughter of Paul and Jeanne Wojta, Julie grew up in Francis Creek and recently completed a stellar season at Green Bay, helping the nationally-ranked Phoenix get back to the NCAA Division One tournament.
At Mishicot High School, Julie competed in basketball, volleyball and track and field. A little know fact is, she also played football for three years in middle school as a wide receiver and defensive end.
On behalf of the residents and village board of Francis Creek, I would like to congratulate Dave and Julie and wish them continued success in their future endeavors.
Street sweeping will be done soon in the village. We would like to remind residents not to blow their lawn clippings in the street. This act will cause the clippings to accumulate in our storm sewers and cause blockage. It increases the amount of sewer cleaning we must do, which increases your taxes and also could cause water to back up into our streets. Thank you in advance for cooperating in this effort.
Francis Creek Lions Club
We want to once again thank our families, friends, neighbors, relatives and co-workers who purchased roses from the Lions club this year. We hope you were pleasantly surprised and appreciative of those special people who thought about you during this time. As always we like to hear your comments as to whether or not you were pleased with your roses. Your comments help our club decide if this is fund raising event we want to continue.
Our 2011-2012 International President Wing-Kun Tam is challenging Lions around the world to plant one million trees this year to demonstrate the strength of our global network. An important part of our extension of service this year is caring for our environment. So as a community project our club decided to plant trees along the trail in Francis Creek. A special thanks to the Isaak Walton League of Manitowoc County Planning & Parks Department for donating the trees and dirt needed for completing the planting. Thank you also to the FC Fire Department for supplying the water. If we are forgetting anyone I apologize. So far 8,262,335 trees have been planted by world- wide Lion members and the FC Lions Club is proud to say they can help add to that number.
We welcome back Jim Lenk to our club. Jim is retired from the Manitowoc Sheriff Department where he most recently held the position of Lieutenant of Detectives. He is married to Marla and resides in the City of Manitowoc.
Rummage Sale Fever? We have the cure. If you have not already done so, be sure and get your registration form turned in so you can be included on the map for this year’s rummage sale event being held June 8th & June 9th. As always we hope to have a good turn out along with warm temperatures.
